Some viewers, not being aware, may have wondered why Nnamdi Kanu committed an offence, as reasonably inferred by President Buhari in possessing ‘2 Passports’: one from Nigeria and the other from Britain.
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the provision of our constitution on the issue: “28. (1) Subject to the other provisions of this section, a person shall forfeit forthwith his Nigerian citizenship if, not being a
citizen of Nigeria by birth, he acquires or retains the citizenship or nationality of a country, other than Nigeria, of which he is not a citizen by birth.” ~S. 28 (1) Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
What this means is that as long as you were born in Nigeria and a citizen, our Constitution does not forbid, stop or deny you the right to acquire the citizenship of another country. Thus, you can hold both passports and not commit any offence by doing so.
The Constitution is clear. As long as you are a Citizen of Nigeria by birth, you can acquire any other citizenship and hold 2 passports lawfully.
The alleged treasonable offences on Mr. Kanu is something ONLY a Court of competent jurisdiction can determine. But as much as I know, indigenous peoples have their rights protected by international law. Let’s promote the rule of law, please
