The members of the Indigenous people of Biafra, South Africa zone is currently protesting at the China-Africa summit venue in South Africa where the African leaders are meeting with the Chinese government for possible future partnership
. The protesters who are carrying various placards written “Buhari is a Genocidist”, “Nigeria is a failed state” and many others which indicate their resolve to foster a self determination for the people of the old eastern region of Nigeria AKA Biafra. The united nations charter of the rights to self determination by the Indigenous people, 2007 has been what has been the support they got to express their rights as one argued.
Biafra was a short lived republic in west africa within the 1967-1970, before the British aided the Nigerian state to go into war with the Biafran state where helpless children, young men and women where killed by weapons and total air, sea and land blockade. Today we see a resurgence to the Biafran republic, led by Prince Nnamdi Kanu, who is the leader of Indigenous people of Biafra who are currently protesting the extra judicial detention of thier leader by the Nigerian secret police, DSS against court order which has granted him bail and bail conditions met.
This continuous protest will negatively impact the image of Nigeria and the current president, Muhammadu Buhari who got to power in 1983 through coup. There is fear allover as there might be a return to dictatorship with the current bill proposed by the APC led federal government of Nigeria to jail social media operators who write against his government.
